ㅤ"A federal judge in Washington who ruled against the Trump administration’s plans to end a federal program that shields some young immigrants from deportation won’t require the administration to process new applications while it appeals his ruling."
ㅤ"In a meeting with state officials on prison reform, Mr. Trump noted the presence of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, whose court challenge to DACA came before a federal judge a day earlier.
ㅤ’Ken just filed a very interesting lawsuit….that I hope is going to be successful,’ Mr. Trump said.
ㅤHe asked Mr. Paxton for an update.
ㅤ’We had a hearing yesterday, and I think it went quite well,’ Mr. Paxton replied. ‘We’ll see what the judge says, but I know we’re right on the law, and we’re right on the Constitution, so we’re confident things are going to go our way.’"

ㅤ"The House defeated the first of two GOP immigration bills Thursday, rejecting an enforcement-heavy approached favored by conservatives that would have mixed a narrow legalization for ‘Dreamers’ with a major boost in border and interior enforcement.
ㅤThe bill was expected to fail, but it still marked a blow for conservatives who’d said it was a viable alternative that improved security without offering a full amnesty.
ㅤIt was defeated 231-193.
ㅤNext up for a vote is a more moderate bill that combines a full pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and other immigrants with less comprehensive enforcement measures.
ㅤThat too is expected to fail."ㅤ

ㅤ"The panel of judges from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Mr. Trump’s prolific comments on immigration and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program may have influenced the decision by then-acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke, when she decided last September to phase out DACA.
ㅤ’I don’t know that we’ve ever had this situation before,’ said Judge John B. Owens, whom President Barack Obama appointed to the 9th Circuit."

ㅤ"Steny Hoyer, the minority whip, hammered the border-wall concept as an ineffective solution to illegal immigration, but he was nonetheless open to providing some wall funding as part of a bipartisan compromise to salvage the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which the President is trying to dismantle."

ㅤ"The Trump administration will try to convince a U.S. appeals court Tuesday that it was justified in ending an Obama-era immigration policy that shielded hundreds of thousands of immigrants from deportation.
ㅤThe 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will be the first federal appeals court to hear arguments about President Donald Trump’s decision to phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program."

ㅤ"’Texas has argued for years that the federal executive branch lacks the power to unilaterally grant unlawfully present aliens lawful presence and work authorization,’ Mr. Paxton said in filing the lawsuit. ‘Left intact, DACA sets a dangerous precedent by giving the executive branch sweeping authority to ignore the laws enacted by Congress and change our nation’s immigration laws to suit a President’s own policy preferences.’"

ㅤ”Mr. Ryan said overall the bill does everything Republicans promised to do during the 2016 election.
ㅤ’This funds the wall, fixes the military, fights opioids, does the things that we said, and does not fund Gateway. This gives Donald Trump the decision on Gateway,’ Mr Ryan said.
ㅤGateway is the infrastructure project to rebuild the tunnel under the Hudson River connecting New York City to New Jersey. The bill does not allot funding specifically for the project, but as much as $541 million will be available for the project under the deal.”

ㅤ”‘The White House opposes a so-called three for three deal,’ said White House spokesman Raj Shah.
ㅤHe said as a result of a recent agreement in Congress to lift spending caps, ‘the routine appropriations process should yield wall funding in’ an overall spending bill under negotiation.
ㅤ’Securing the border is one of the most vital functions of government and is a core part of any routine funding bill,’ Mr. Shah said in a statement. ‘Separately, we have never stopped working to negotiate an immigration reform package that addresses DACA, stops illegal immigration and secures and modernizes our legal immigration system.'”

ㅤ”Judge Roger W. Titus, a Bush appointee to the bench in Maryland, said the judges in California and New York who blocked the phaseout attempted to substitute their own judgments for that of the Homeland Security Department, crossing constitutional lines in order to strike at Mr. Trump’s policies.
ㅤJudge Titus went even further, praising the Trump administration for the way it handled the situation with a six-month phaseout.”

ㅤô¿ô …DACA has been a difficult issue for the President. He has publicly stated that his personal preference is to grant amnesty for the Dreamers. But he also believes in following the letter of the law and satisfying the desires of the most conservative factions of his “base.” Putting the responsibility for DACA on Congress was a brilliant move on the part of the President.
ㅤSupport for amnesty has grown even among conservatives. His proposal to deal for the border wall was perfectly timed.
ㅤThe injunction that allows renewals to continue was probably welcomed by the President considering he personally desires amnesty for the Dreamers.
ㅤ America has been wounded by our failed immigration policy. The first step in healing a wound is to stop the flow of blood. Build the border wall.

ㅤ”Monday was supposed to be the deadline either when illegal immigrant Dreamers began to lose their status under the Trump administration’s phaseout of the Obama-era DACA deportation amnesty, or when Congress would swoop to the rescue and grant them a path to full citizenship rights.
ㅤInstead, the week dawns with the program still mostly intact, thanks to the courts. Meanwhile, Congress is stalemated and immigrant rights activists are vowing political retribution on the lot of them — though President Trump takes the brunt of their anger.”

ㅤô¿ô …No, it does not. The Trump admin thought the DACA case was sufficiently important to bypass the appeals court and take the case directly to SCOTUS. The action was highly unusual.
ㅤThe Supreme Court decided that the DACA case was NOT sufficiently important to bypass the appeals court. Their decision delays ending DACA. But it is not an indication of how SCOTUS would rule if their ruling became necessary.
