France Suspends Climate Tax Following Weeks Of Anti-Macron Protests

ㅤ"French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announced Tuesday that the government is suspending a gas tax that roiled the country in widespread violence and chaos.
ㅤThe government proposed a slew of new carbon taxes designed to wean consumers off fossil fuels and transfer to electric cars. The price hikes, however, triggered a wave of unrest unseen in recent decades.
ㅤTuesday’s announcement represents a major reversal for President Emmanuel Macron’ government, which initially stood its ground. Critics are accusing the President of being out of touch with the plight of normal French citizens."

Republicans consider the unthinkable: A gas tax increase to pay for infrastructure

REPUBLICANS CONSIDER THE UNTHINKABLE: A GAS TAX INCREASE TO PAY FOR INFRASTRUCTUREp12115609.jpg

ㅤ”One [alternative] option would be to charge drivers for the amount they drive, in the form of a tax on vehicle miles traveled, or VMT.
ㅤCalifornia and Oregon have introduced VMT pilot programs, in which motorists can volunteer to pay taxes on the miles they travel and get a rebate on the gas tax they pay.”

ㅤô¿ô …If the Republicans in Congress raise the gas tax, which is horribly unfair to lower income people, I would be ashamed to call myself a Republican.
ㅤIf revenue must be raised to pay for infrastructure, I think the VMT is a good idea. But certainly not the way CA and OR are doing it, as their method is still unfair to the poor.
ㅤThere would need to be exemptions for transit of goods and material. But assuming the details can be fairly addressed, the VMT could make the people actually using the highways and bridges pay for the highways and bridges. Lower income people who just drive back and forth to a local job wouldn’t be penalized.
