GOP moves to prevent shutdown with stopgap spending bill

ㅤ"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Wednesday he will move a stopgap measure funding the government until early February.
ㅤThe measure if passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump would prevent a partial shutdown set to begin Saturday and would fund government departments and agencies through Feb. 8.
ㅤIt will keep funding for border fencing flat and punt a showdown on that issue until next year — when Trump will have less leverage with Democrats in control of the House. McConnell warned that Trump has no intention of dropping the issue."

McConnell rejects Mueller protection bill

ㅤ"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell flatly rejected the need to approve legislation protecting the special counsel’s probe into the 2016 election, saying Wednesday there’s no evidence the investigation needs protection.
ㅤMr. McConnell laid out Republicans’ goals for the lame-duck session of Congress, saying preventing a government shutdown is tops on the list, along with passing new rules to stop sexual harassment on Capitol Hill and approving a farm bill."

Senate passes spending deal nearly two hours into partial government closure

SENATE PASSES SPENDING DEAL NEARLY TWO HOURS INTO PARTIAL GOVERNMENT CLOSUREp09022918.jpg

ㅤ”Aside from funding the government, the bill sets an increase in federal spending caps for the next two years — Congress was expected to use the next few weeks writing the spending bill that fits those caps. It also suspends the nation’s borrowing limit for one year, allowing it to borrow whatever it wants.”

Senate plans vote on three-week stopgap measure

p4471521171006.png

ㅤ”The Senate is expected to hold a procedural vote at 1 a.m. Monday on a three-week stopgap measure to reopen the government.
ㅤSenate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) had warned earlier that he would force a procedural vote if senators could not reach an agreement. Absent a deal, 1 a.m. is the earliest the Senate would be able to hold such a vote.
ㅤSen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said he thinks negotiators could be close to a breakthrough, but immigration issues are still a sticking point.”

No deal in sight as shutdown extends to second day

p4471221142955.png

ㅤ”Republicans and Democrats are casting blame on one another for a government shutdown that entered its second day on Sunday and shows no signs of ending.
ㅤWith hundreds of thousands of federal workers expected to begin furloughs on Monday, White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney said a shutdown that began on the anniversary of President Trump’s inauguration — and against a backdrop of women’s marches criticizing his leadership — could last more than a week.
ㅤ’I think Democrats want to see the President give the State of the Union under a shutdown,’ he said on ‘Fox News Sunday.’ That address is scheduled for Jan. 30.”

Corker says Senate leaders on verge of deal

p4465519232947.png

ㅤ”Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said leadership is on the verge of a deal to avert a government shutdown with less an hour to go.
ㅤ’We’re down to a difference of literally three or four days,’ he said.
ㅤBoth options being discussed, according to Corker, would keep the government funded past President Trump’s State of the Union.
ㅤCorker said he expected the agreement could be reached before the midnight deadline to keep the government open.”

ㅤô¿ô …This is simple BS. If I were in Corker’s shoes, I’d retire too.

What happens if the government shuts down

p4462719065441.jpg

ㅤ”Depending on the length of the shutdown, senators would be forced to walk past a frozen clock in a hallway outside the chamber — the staff responsible for winding it would be furloughed, too. In 2013, the clock’s hands were stuck at 12:14 for days until the government reopened.”
